Interview - AUTUMN

English text
Autumn

Martín: Hi there! You have a new album out and new line-up, tell us about this new AUTUMN´s chapter.

Jan: Altitude is the first album with Marjan as the lead singer and I think it has became a progression of the My new time album. A bit more layered songs and probably a bit more symphonic.

M: The first impression of the album is that there is a main concept about fly, what about that?

J: We use it as a metaphor to indicate the rush of life and the great experience of sometimes stepping out of this rush and enjoy the moment. The cover depicts this by showing a modern, busy city with an almost ancient flying machine above it. The differences are huge but the time-span between those two worlds are less than a 100 years. So life has become so fast that a lot of people live it, but not enjoy it. That is one of the themes of the album: take a step back and look at it from a higher altitude.

M: Gothic Metal, Alternative, Melancholic Rock... Which is your definition for AUTUMN´s sound?

J: Symphonic rock would cover it I suppose. Let’s keep it as general as possible, so that we can use a lot of different influences within the music.

M: What are the differences between your past albums and this one?

J: As I mentioned before, I think it is a bit more layered and symphonic, whereas My new time was more to the point and rock-oriented.

M: Where do you find the inspiration to create a new song?

J: from everywhere, I play the drums, but I also use other instruments to write structures for the songs. This can lead to surprising songs, since I am not a native guitar or keyboard player. And all members contribute to the writing, so this mix of styles ultimately makes the Autumn sound.

M: You made a video for “Satellites”, are you planning to film a new video?

J: Yes, but more low-budget. We are planning to shoot one somewhere in spring.

M: What can we expect about AUTUMN´s live on stage?

J: We already did the release show and we found it very cool to play the new songs. We will probably mix the new songs with songs from the other albums, but I suppose we will try to play as much of the new material as possible.

M: How do you see Gothic-Melancholic Metal scene in Europe today?

J: It’s ok I suppose. I do not really follow these things closely, but here in Holland there are a lot of great bands.

M: Your Top Five albums?

Jan:
Faith no More – King for a day, fool for a lifetime
The end – Elementary
The wounded – Atlantic
Volbeat - Rock The Rebel / Metal The Devil
Faith no More – Angel Dust

M: Thank you very much for your time. Here you have space to write what you want as farewell.

J: Thank you for your interest in the band and I hope your readers will check the altitude album. You can listen a full album preview at www.myspace.com/autumnband
