Interview - MORTAL FORM

English text
Mortal Form

Martín: Hello! Your debut album is out now, tell us about MORTAL FORM´s long career and the birth of “Taste The Blood”.

Oscar: It started in 1994 when guitarists Teun and Vince and drum player Bastiaan started to Play covers from bands like Black Sabbath, Sepultura and Metallica.
In 1999 de band was called Mortal Form and they recorded two demos and a full length album called “Evil reborn”, which was never released.
After recording “Evil reborn” the vocalist Edme was fired from the band due to a lack of interest and vocalist Rogier takes his place. Shortly after bass player Tobias left the band due to his obligations with the military police he was replaced by bass player Oscar. With this line-up Mortal form started writing and rehearsing new songs and recorded them in 2008.
The result is “Taste the Blood” which contains Mortal form songs mainly written in the period between 2003 till 2007.

M: Your music is as epic as brutal. How is the process to create that kind of music?

O: Songwriting in our band is mainly done in the rehearse room, we all have ideas and we work them out, till they are songs we are all pleased with.
So, some songs may be changed several times till its satisfying to all the members.
For some songs this takes months and others are done in one evening.
We all like several kinds of metal, so everyone will come up with a riff or part that is totally different.
We like to blend our favourite styles of metal, its mainly death, thrash and heavy metal.

M: Your lyrics talks about very different themes such as war, religion, history, guts... Where do you find the inspiration to create a new song?

O: Our vocalist Rogier writes all the lyrics, he is very interested in ancient wars and religion. He also wrote a lyric about a drinking session with the band, a lot of booze and some bad kebab (guts in the gutter).

M: Your sound mixes different elements from Death Metal and Thrash Metal among others. How do you like to define your own style?

O: We think of it as thrash mixed with death and heavy metal. It’s not only fast and brutal but also with lots of melody and rhythm changes, just how we like it!

M: How were the recording sessions of the album? Are you satisfied with the results?

O: The recordings took place in two different studio’s, over a period of 4 months.
We could only record in the weekends because we all have normal day jobs and the producer was not available every weekend so that’s why it took so long…
We wanted a raw and no overproduced sound, so the album would sound honest and direct. I think we succeeded and we are very happy with the result!

Mortal Form

M: Many extreme bands are making videos to promote its songs, what is your opinion about making videos?

O: A music video can help spreading your music, unfortunately in our country there is not much television time for our kind of music.
We also have a video for the first song from the album “the uprising”, you can watch it on our myspace site or on our homepage (will be online in a few weeks).

M: What can we expect about MORTAL FORM’s live on stage?

O: Mortal form is a really energetic live band, we all love to perform live on stage.
You can watch some clips on the myspace site, we play with a lot of enthusiasm and want to convince the audience to go nuts with us till our heads drop off!

M: Can you choose two bands or artists with different styles that influenced you to be a musician?

O: I am very influenced by Steve Harris from Iron maiden and Cliff Burton from Metallica also .No nonsense just beat up that bass and bang your head!

M: How do you see Death Metal scene in Holland today?

O: There are a lot of good bands like Hail of bullets and Detonation and metal has never lost ground here! There is a solid fan base.
I think it will stay this way, because metal fans are very devoted fans!

M: What is your opinion about music in our days with the internet and mp3 downloads?

O: Getting music from the internet is easy and as long as you get it legal, there’s no harm done!
But we have to realize that if we continue to rip al music, bands and artists cannot finance their recordings and labels cannot exist to spread the music among you.
It will be difficult to get good music in good quality. If you download it, listen to it and if you like it, run to the store and buy it!,(or purchase it online).
We don’t have to get rich, we only want to continue spreading our music and play it live for you!

M: Thank you very much for your time. Here you have space to write what you want as farewell.

O: Martin, thank you for the interview and we hope to reach a lot of metalheads out there with our music . So please feel free to visit our website; www.mortalform.nl or www.myspace.com/whendeathmeetsthrash.
See you on stage…
